NAACP President and CEO, Derrick Johnson, discusses Voter Suppression and Discrimination
Government officials like you are still spending time today to listen to citizens and their concerns regarding the Shelby vs. Holder case and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to this day. This video clip (clink button to the right to travel to the link) of Derrick Johnson from September 16, 2019 shows him discussing how voter suppression and discrimination is still present in current day America. He discusses how the Shelby County vs. Holder Act has affected African Americans and other marginalized groups since it’s ruling, particularly in the 2016 election. He challenged that voter suppression is still rampant throughout America and discussed how it may be an issue in the upcoming 2020 election. Although officials have not ruled that they would create a new law to prevent voter suppression, civil rights activists are still fighting for voting rights even now. The fight that the protesters during the March on Washington still lives on to today, proving that this fight is not in the past; the fight for voting rights is right now. People just like you are working hard to ensure Americans get the rights that they need! Keep up the support and the work!
